About the country

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country in Southeastern Europe, situated on the Balkan Peninsula.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a almost landlocked country – it has a narrow coast at the Adriatic Sea, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) long surrounding the town of Neum. It borders Croatia to the north, west and south; Serbia to the east; and Montenegro to the southeast.

The country’s diverse geography ranges from mountainous terrain in the central and eastern interior to moderately hilly in the northwest, and predominantly flatland in the northeast. Bosnia, the larger inland region has a moderate continental climate, with hot summers and cold, snowy winters. In contrast, Herzegovina, situated at the southern tip, has a Mediterranean climate with a plain topography.

Discover the heart-shaped land where eastern and western civilizations have intersected, occasionally clashed, but more often enriched and reinforced each other throughout its captivating history. The name Bosnia and Herzegovina reflects the two regions, with Bosnia in the north and Herzegovina in the south, their borders loosely defined.

Sarajevo is the capital and largest city. After the war (1992- 1995) this country was divided into two autonomous entities: Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska, and had a three-member Presidency composed of a member of each major ethnic group: Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats.

Due to its long and rich history of religious and cultural diversity, Sarajevo is sometimes called the “Jerusalem of Europe”. It is one of only a few major European cities which have a mosque, Catholic church, Orthodox church and synagogue in the same neighborhood.
The 1984 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XIV Olympic Winter Games, was a winter multi-sport event which took place from 8–19 February 1984 in Sarajevo, SFR Yugoslavia, in present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Sarajevo is a city with a soul. And to feel its soul, the best is to come and live it.

Take a stroll through Sarajevos old town Baščaršija

Baščaršija is Sarajevo’s old bazaar and the historical and cultural center of the city, Sarajevos old Bazaar is the heart and soul of Sarajevo and a meeting point for locals. Vijecnica (City Hall, National Library)

Vijecnica is the most extravagant building constructed during Austro-Hungarian occupation. It represents the meeting of civilizations of East and West. Today, in the building are situated the national and university libraries. After World War II, Vijećnica became home to the National and University Library of BiH. The architecture of the city hall contains all elements and traces of “oriental” or “moorish” bond, which appeared in BiH at the time when the European architects strived to create a national style of art.

National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina

It was established in 1888, having originally been conceived around 1850. In 1913, the museum building was expanded by the Czech architect Karel Pařík who designed a structure of four symmetric pavilions with a facade in the Italian Renaissance Revival style. The four pavilions contain the departments of archaeology, ethnology, natural history, and a library. After being closed for several years due to heavy damage in the recent war, the museum has re-opened and is in the process of mounting new and pre-existing exhibits.

It has a library with 162,000 volumes.

Olympic beauties

Trebević is 1,627 meters tall, making it the second shortest of the Sarajevo mountains. During the Middle Ages, Trebević was known as Zlatni Do. There are numerous flora and fauna species. Trebevic is also considered to be one of the last snow vole habitats. It was declared a protected natural site.

Bjelasnica Mountain

Bjelašnica is a mountain in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, located southwest of the city of Sarajevo. At the highest point there is a significant weather station, which is the highest permanently inhabited point in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mt. Bjelašnica (2,067 m) is named after the white snow cover, which remains on its tops until August. Bjelašnica is covered with green grass in the summer and deep snow in the winter. In good weather you can visit the mountain villages,  Lukomir and Umoljani – the highest inhabited settlements in BiH.

Igman Mountain

Igman is a mountain plateau in central Bosnia and Herzegovina. Geologically, Igman is part of the Dinaric Alps and formed largely of secondary and tertiary sedimentary rock, mostly Limestone. From spring to late autumn, Igman is the best place for walks, hiking, mountaineering and cycling; in general, this mountain is ideal for those who love untouched nature.

Mostar

The historic town of Mostar, spanning a deep valley of the Neretva River, developed in the 15th and 16th centuries as an Ottoman frontier town and during the Austro-Hungarian period in the 19th and 20th centuries. Mostar has long been known for its old Turkish houses and Old Bridge, Stari Most, after which it is named. In the 1990s conflict, however, most of the historic town and the Old Bridge, designed by the renowned architect Sinan, was destroyed. The Old Bridge was recently rebuilt and many of the edifices in the Old Town have been restored or rebuilt with the contribution of an international scientific committee established by UNESCO.

Visegrad bridge and Andricgrad

Visegrad bridge, also known as the „The Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge“, is a historic bridge in Visegrad, over the Drina river in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2007. bridge entered UNESCO world heritage list as a bridge with big cultural impact, and also as a best representative of a classical ottoman style in bridge making. The bridge was built in the period from 1571 to 1577 by at that time the most famous Turkish architect Mimar Sinan.

The „town within a town“ on the Drina river. The basic concept of Andricgrad is a physical recreation of the Visegrad of Andric’s novel that will serve as an imaginative backdrop to help visitors understand and appreciate the history and culture of the town and surrounding area. The moving force behind this bold enterprise that purports to celebrate the history of Visegrad, honour the memory of the town’s most famous son and at the same time offer hope of economic revival is Emir Kusturica, the internationally acclaimed Serbian film director, twice winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes.

Trebinje

One of the unavoidable tourist destinations is certainly the city of Trebinje, a city of sunshine, wine, poets and monasteries, which we certainly recommend to visit if you are on the sojourn through Bosnia or the Balkans. Located in the south-eastern part of the country in sunny Herzegovina, the location is well connected with several other very attractive destinations in its immediate vicinity, such as Dubrovnik, Budva and Mostar.

National park Sutjeska

Sutjeska National park is the largest and oldest national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The park is home to a variety of natural attractions, including the Mountain Maglic, Sutjeska river, and Perućica primeval forest. It is certainly the most beautiful and most diverse national park in this part of the region.

Some of the most popular attractions of Sutjeska National Park are:

-Mountain Maglić: The highest peak of Bosnia and Herzegovina, offering stunning views of surrounding mountains and valleys.

-Primeval forest Perućica: One of the last remaining primeval forests in Europe, home to a variety of rare and endangered plants and animals.

-Skakavac Waterfall: A 75-meters-high waterfall in the heart of Perućica primeval forest.

-Tjentište War Memorial: Memorial complex dedicated to the Battle of Sutjeska, which took place in the park during the World War II

-Zelengora Mountain: Known for its “Mountain eyes” – clear  glacial lakes located in the very bases of its peaks. Zelengora offers a variety of activities for summer vacation and it is an ideal summer destination.

Sutjeska National park is located on the road Belgrade – Visegrad – Foca – Dubrovnik and Sarajevo – Foca -Dubrovnik.

National park Kozara

Kozara National Park is situated between the rivers Una, Sava, Sana and Vrbas, in the Republika Srpska entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Kozara was proclaimed a protected national forest in 1967. These 3,375 hectares of dense forest and hilly meadows have earned the nickname ‘Green Beauty of Krajina’.
A dedicated part of the park is designed for nature enthusiasts, offering a range of activities such as walking, hiking, biking, traversing via ferrata, and engaging in herb picking.

Kozara National park manages a special hunting ground “Kozara” with 16.728 ha of the haunting area, and is of a mountainous typ. The hunting ground is divided into three areas.

Kozara was also a former battleground during World War II. The Partisans intimate knowledge of Bosnia’s rough terrain gave them an advantage over the newly occupying Nazi Germans. Kozara is an aerial spa and what makes it unique is a fast process of regeneration of red blood cells. This is a place where you can breathe fully and do sports activities while enjoying beautiful landscapes.

National park Una

The captivating natural oasis, featuring one of the world’s cleanest rivers, draws daily visitors from various continents to Bosnia and Herzegovina to explore the wonders of Una National Park.
Una National Park was established on 29 May 2008 around the rivers Upper Una River, Krka and the Unac. It stands as the largest and most recently established national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The main purpose of the park is to protect the unspoiled Una river and its tributaries Krka and Unac.

The Una’s waterfalls and white water rapids highlight the park. The most famous waterfalls are those at Martin Brod, where the popular “International Una Regatta” kayaking competition begins, and Štrbački Buk further downstream.

Throughout the park, visitors can enjoy prime conditions for rafting, fishing, cycling, hiking, and camping. Jumping from the city bridges in Bihać and Bosanska Krupa is also popular. Largest waterfall on the Una river is Štrbački Buk, and is one of the main features in the Park.

In terms of cultural and historical area, this area abounds with a rich heritage of archaeological sites and historical monuments, and the special position of the area on the transit line to the sea led it under the influences of many cultures in the past, from where the rich archaeological sites date, remains of medieval fortresses and religious buildings of different faiths and cultures.

We'll be back Apsolutno bez ikakve zamerke na bilo šta.

Prvi put sam u Encijan došla kada sam imala 9 godina. A obradovaće vas i krofnama!

Ivan i Jasmina Miljković, Beograd

Mind-blowing! Not your average, generic camp! With all due respect to other camps, there's no comparison between Encijan and others! Location of the camp is unbeatable, untouched nature all around, beautiful cabins and common place that conform to surrounding nature and a view of magnificent turquoise Tara. The staff couldn't be more polite, they really make you feel taken care of. And the food is.. WOW! And if you have some special requests regarding your nutrition (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc.), you need not worry, all your wishes will be met with. August of 2020 was the second time I went to Encijan, first time with my family and this time with friends, so it's safe to say that this camp is perfect for everyone and for every occasion. And I had fun every time 🙂 In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend Encijan! ♥
