National park Durmitor

Durmitor, the most beautiful and highest mountain in Montenegro ant it is also a national park.

The name Durmitor is probably derived from Balkan Romance-Vlach, meaning “sleeping place” (cognate with English dormitory).

The Durmitor National Park, created in 1952, includes the massif of Durmitor, the canyons of Tara, Sušica and Draga rivers and the higher part of the canyon plateau Komarnica, covering an area of 390 km². It is the largest protected area in Montenegro, and it was inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1980.

80 kilometers long and 1,300 meters deep, the Tara River Canyon in the Durmitor National Park is the deepest gorge in Europe, and is the second largest in the world, after the Grand Canyon

Durmitor mountain is the center of Montenegrin mountain tourism. The tourist facilities are concentrated around the town of Žabljak. In winter, the main activities on Durmitor are skiing and snowboarding. In summer, the activities shift to hiking, mountaineering and recreational tourism. Water sports are also practiced in the area. One of the most prominent attractions of Durmitor mountain are 18 glacial lakes, the best known of which is the Black Lake.

One of the main attractions in Durmitor is also Red Rock Zip Line, that goes at top of the canyon next to the famous bridge. Also if you pass by there canyoning is a must. It is organised in the Nevidio Canyon.

Because of its attractiveness, and tight interaction with the other destinations we offer, Durmitor is also the place where we often spend our time and where we are welcomed as guests. With you, of course! Usually it is in the summer, when the good-natured giant opens his hands and arms to accommodate all those who want a holiday, or even just a break in the fresh and bracing mountain air. And there are more. Diverse and unspoiled nature Durmitor, is an ideal destination for all those who love adventure and active holidays.

Zabljak

Zabljak, on altitude of 1400 meters above sea level, is the highest urban village in the region, the residence of the National Park Durmitor. National park Durmitor is famous and popular winter resort, but this place is alive all year round and is well visited in the summer as well. In those summer months, it looks like a large kitchen where something is constantly is cooking and only the best travel gourmets coming out, spicy blend of traditional and modern. Even the most demanding will not leave disappointed. More and more tourists identify Zabljak as an ideal starting point for all activities that mountain tourism has to offer. And there are a lot of these in Durmitor from stroll the beautiful parts of the park, across rafting on the Tara River and adrenaline adventures in the canyon Nevidio, until summer skiing on the glacier. There are many acitivities and and their combinations, ensuring that everyone can tailor their own perfect trip.
Possibilities are inexhaustible and as well as their combination. Here everyone can find the ideal activity.

Đurđevića Tara bridge

One of the things that will forever relate a traveler with Montenegro and Tara is not the work of nature, but of man. Merged in the very essence of rock that Tara relentlessly cuts, with almost natural grace and grandeur worthy of reverence, along with the river, lives the Djurdjevica Tara Bridge.

Đurđevića Tara Bridge, which was designed by Mijat Trojanović, was built between 1937 and 1940 in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The project’s Chief Engineer was Isaac Russo.

The 365-metre-long (1,198 ft) bridge has five arches; the largest span is 116 meter’s (381 ft). The roadway stands 172 metres (564 ft) above the Tara River. At the time of its completion, it was the biggest vehicular concrete arch bridge in Europe. t is located at the crossroads between Mojkovac, Žabljak and Pljevlja, between the villages of Budečevica and Trešnjica.

Nice architectural structure to observe, magnificent and enormous. Great thrill is taking zip line next to it and go across the valley. The view from the bridge is really memorable and the bridge itself is quite interesting. We can’t imagine a deep canyon without a zip line. The zip line starting point is on the height of 170, above the river Tara and the zip line cable is more then 800 m The speed is 50 km per hour the most beautiful and exciting part goes under the famous Djurdjevica Most bridge. This landmark allows adventurers to take in one specific famous place from below and up above.

Near the bridge, there are restaurants where you can relax and enjoy.

Amazing bridge & scenery well worth a visit.

Black Lake

Black Lake is a glacial lake located  on Mountain Durmitor, at an elevation of 1 416 m.

Black lake lies at the foot of Medjed Peak and has an area of 0,515 square km. The lake consists of two smaller lakes: Big lake (Veliko Jezero) and Little lake (Malo jezero). The lakes are connected by a narrow strait that dries up during the summer, creating two separate lakes. Black lake is filled by numerous mountain streams, the best known being Mlin Creek. Other streams have no name because they appear periodically, when snow is melting from Durmitor mountain.

Black lake is the premium tourist attraction of the Durmitor area. It is the largest and the best know among 18 glacial lakes on the mountain. The lake is easily accessible, as it is within walking distance from the center of the town of Zabljak.

A 3.5 kilometers walking path circles around the entire lake, and it is popular destination for recreation and hiking. Many mountain trails lead from it to other smaller lakes around Zabljak.

The water temperature exceeds to 22 degrees, so that during the hot summer months, the lake is a paradise for swimmers.

Black lake may be more symbolic of thsi region’s beauty than its only attraction – meaning that if you venture fire and wide in Durmitor National park, Black lake and many other glacial lakes of Durmitor may inspire you to return to the regioin in the future.

Bobotov Kuk

Bobotov kuk is the highest peak in NP Durmitor, situated in northern Montenegro, with an elevation of 2,525 meters, offering stunning views and a sense of accomplishment.

The first recorded ascent of Bobotov Kuk was in 1883 by an Austrian cartographer, Oscar Baumann.

The route to the peak is well marked with clear signposts and trail markings. It is approximately a 10-hour round trip as long as a moderate pace is maintained. The outward walk consists of approximately 4 – 5 hours hiking until the last ascent where it is a scramble to just below the peak.

Bobotov kuk welcomes all visitors with a beautiful view on Durmitor Mountains which is worth all the effort, the views were continuously fabulous. Astonishing landscapes all the way and when you reach the top is breath taking. There´s a book where you can write that you’ve been there.

The summit of Bobotov Kuk is one of the highest in Montenegro and you are supposed to have a breathtaking view from up there. You eyes wander from Bosnia and Herzegovina all the way to Albania.

The ascent to Bobotov Kuk is a great pleasure for all mountaineers, because it is worth of hiking. Due to its beautiful location in the rugged mountain scape of Durmitor National Park, it is definitely worth a visit. There are numerous hikes in Durmitor National Park but the one up Bobotov Kuk is the ultimate one.

Great challenge that takes a few hours of trekking and climbing. Although challenging, once you are at the top, you will realize that it is a rewarding hike.

Sedlena greda

Sedlena Greda (2227 m) is one of the most impressive and most beautiful peaks of Durmitor. Also, Sedlena Greda is for sure one of the most beautiful world’s natural wonders. That’s the reason while many people call that peak ‘Saddle of Gods’.

Sedlo (1907m) is highest road pass in Montenegro. It is crossed by Zabljak – Trsa road, which is mostly macadam. It is located between Sedlena Greda (2227m), on the south, and Uvita Greda (2199m), on the north, 12 km from Zabljak. Of those 12 last 3 km are macadam, which is currently quite bad, but passable for all cars if you drive slowly. To reach Sedlo pass head from center of Zabljak towards Savnik (south). Road goes over undulating grassy Jezerska Povrs plateau. After 5 km table by the road will show you that Trsa is right. Over the plateau road heads towards Sljeme and Savin Kuk who show their soft green slopes from this side. Along the plateau many small houses are scattered, view is fantastic. Then road turns left and winds up gradually, over the open grassy slopes, through Virak village and rare beech groves behind it. Left below the road is Poscensko Jezero (1487m) lake. After few kilometers, below beautiful steep and sharp cone of Stozina (1905m), asphalt ends and macadam enters upper part of Poscenska Dolina valley. Left is beautiful rocky Ranisava (2081m) and sharp green Sedlena Greda (2227m). In front of, right of Sedlo pass, is also green and sharp Uvita Greda (2199m). Right above the road are high and green slopes of Sljeme (2455m). After 3 km of macadam and two sharp serpentines road reaches Sedlo pass.

Canyon Nevidio

The harsh, but beautiful landscape of Durmitor massif is adorned by pearl of unusual beauty and still more unusual name – Nevidio (Unseen). It was last discovered canyon in Europe, narrow and deep rift that has been carved by a small river Komarninca between the slopes of Durmitor and Vojnik. Inaccessible terrain kept the magical beauty from the eyes for a long time. Just the name symbolically speaks of canyon: that you cannot see, which has not been seen.

After several serious, but unsuccessful attempts, the canyon was finally conquered in 1965 by members of the  mountaineering association “Javorak” from Niksic, Montenegro. Modestly equipped, but armed with persistence and determination, they entered the canyon and followed the course of the river  for about 3.5 km, eventually passing through.

While Nevidio Canyon is still the most inaccessible and inhospitable canyon in Europe, it is now available to all true nature lovers, adventurers and adrenaline addicts, ready to respond to the challenges of this mysterious place. Nevidio Canyon is only accessible to visitors as part of an organized group accompanied by professional guides. This is due to the challenging terrain and the need to ensure safety. For many visitors the biggest victory is overcoming their own fears.

Canyon Hrcavka

Canyons can be very easy or extremely difficult, though emphasis in the sport is usually on aesthetics and fun rather than pure difficulty. A wide variety of canyoning routes are found throughout the world, and canyoning is enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels.

Between the mountain ridge of the mountain Zelengora at an altitude of 1570 meters springs Hrcavka River. This river belongs to Foca, actually to NP Sutjeska and with its flows through the confluence of the Sutjeska River at an altitude of 530 meters.

Hrčavka is the largest tributary of Sutjeska and the altitude difference from the source to the confluence in the Sutjeska is about 1000 meters.

Hrcavka Canyon is one of the last discovered canyons in Europe and by its very nature is wild and intact. The passage through the canyon is traced with two times the length of about 13 km and the passage through the canyon can take between 4 h-6 h.

Hrcavka Canyon is covered with rocks on both sides up to 200 meters high. If you want to swim be ready for a old but clean water.

The canyon itself is quite demanding and it is necessary to use the alpinistic equipment as well to swim and jump from rocks.

We'll be back Apsolutno bez ikakve zamerke na bilo šta.

Prvi put sam u Encijan došla kada sam imala 9 godina. A obradovaće vas i krofnama!

Ivan i Jasmina Miljković, Beograd

Mind-blowing! Not your average, generic camp! With all due respect to other camps, there's no comparison between Encijan and others! Location of the camp is unbeatable, untouched nature all around, beautiful cabins and common place that conform to surrounding nature and a view of magnificent turquoise Tara. The staff couldn't be more polite, they really make you feel taken care of. And the food is.. WOW! And if you have some special requests regarding your nutrition (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc.), you need not worry, all your wishes will be met with. August of 2020 was the second time I went to Encijan, first time with my family and this time with friends, so it's safe to say that this camp is perfect for everyone and for every occasion. And I had fun every time 🙂 In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend Encijan! ♥
